$10,500 bonus for White Robe Lodge- trained Monserrat

The Brian and Shane Anderton-trained Montserrat earned a $10,500 bonus for her Christchurch owners Pat Kennedy and his wife, Allayne with her win in a New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl series maiden race at Wingatui on Friday. The bonus was in addition to the $7500 prize for first. Montserrat (Jacob Lowry) won by three and three quarter lengths over 1400m on a heavy track, extending a 40 year association for Pat Kennedy and Brian Anderton.

Montserrat joined the White Robe Lodge stable this year to target the Pearl series in the South Island. She had four fourths from five starts as a 3yr-old from the Cambridge stable of Margaret Falconer. Montserrat was nominated for the series as a yearling at a fee of $920. Montserrat is further connected to White Robe Lodge through her pedigree. She is by Captain Rio from Drom, who was bred by Pat Kennedy from Cher Style, a Famous Star - All Style mare loaned him by WRL stud managers Wayne and Karen Stewart and eventually gifted after he lost the mare Norah Jo foaling. Pat bred four foals from Cher Style. She left winners Oodles (five), Patrice (two) and Patricio (two). Drom (by Johar), who did not have a good temperament, was unplaced in 12 starts. Montserrat is her second foal.

Pat Kennedy and Brian Fay raced the 1988 Australian Grand National Steeplechase winner Derrydonnell, who was trained at Wingatui by the late Bryan Kennedy. Derrydonnell was by WRL sire Trelay from Cashla, by Causeur, who also stood at WRL. Brian Anderton trained Cashla for Kennedy and Fay 40 years ago after they bought her from the late Jim Murray. She was a half sister to Cranbrook and Fairlane, prolific flat winners trained out of Washdyke.

"I bought Cashla after I had a big win off Fairlane,''recalled Kennedy.

Cashla did not measure up in four starts when troubled by a locking stifle. Derrydonnell was her second foal.

Norah Jo, a winning half sister by Palatable to Derrydonnell, died foaling to Oregon and none of her four foals were registered.
